Post Doctoral Fellowships in Memory of Mrs. Leah M. Smith

The Post Doctoral Fellowships are intended to assist in the absorption of young researchers by accredited research institutions or university hospitals in Israel, or to enable a clinician to pursue specialization in research on the subjects of depression or other disorders.
- Any accredited research institution in Israel may nominate a suitable candidate on condition that he or she will be allocated resources for research within the framework of the institution and that his or her subject of interest is in an area of psychobiology. Applications should be submitted by an accredited institution or hospital (not by the candidates themselves). Candidates may be clinicians who have completed their specialization and are interested in dedicating a year or two of their time to research.
- Candidates for a Fellowship may also apply for a regular Young Investigator Grant in addition to their candidacy for a stipend.
- The Institute will routinely monitor the activities of the stipend recipient and has the right to cancel the stipend if the work plan and progress of the stipend recipient do not meet the requirements of the Institute.
- The Institute will undertake financing of the stipend for a period of one to two years, a period designated for the purpose of enabling the institution in which the stipend recipient will be absorbed to establish a slot for a permanent position for him or her, or to assist in his or her absorption in the industrial or public sectors.
- Applicant Institutions must undertake the following commitments:
a. To provide the recipient of the Fellowship with research space and equipment for carrying out his or her research, for the period involved.
b. To provide the recipient of the Fellowship with suitable supervision by a senior scientist who will be responsible for his or her future in the field of research.
c. Not to engage the recipient of the Fellowship in teaching or other services at the Institution where he is employed.
- Nominating institutions should submit a letter describing the background of the recommendation, the curriculum vitae and list of publications of the candidate, and also:
a. A detailed letter from the senior scientist responsible for supervising the Fellowship recipient and a description of the research project.
b. A letter from the Administration of the Institution in which the Fellowship recipient will be employed indicating the chances for future absorption by the Institution
c. Two letters of recommendation for the candidate by accredited scientists in his area of work.
Application material must be submitted in English. There are no special forms for Fellowships.
Fellowship support is up to $10,000 per annum, with mandatory matching funds supplied by the host Institution or another source of another $10,000 per annum.
Deadline for submission: April 30 of each year.
Charles E. Smith Fellowship in Honor of Professor Joel Elkes
This Fellowship is awarded to one of the applicants for a Young Investigator Grant, as above. The purpose of the Fellowship is to assist in the absorption of a young scientist in the field of psychobiology into a track which will lead to a permanent academic position upon completion of the period of the Fellowship. Thus, the nominating institution should submit an explicit commitment to the effect that at the end of the period of the fellowship, a permanent position will be made available to the Fellow, based upon his or her personal distinction in research and teaching. The nominator should also attach 3 letters of recommendation. The young MD or Ph.D. will be provided with initial research support for up to 3 years, conditional upon availability of at least the same level of research resources which will be provided by the employing Institute. Applications should be submitted on our regular Young Investigator Grant forms, with the additions specific to this Fellowship (nomination and recommendations). Each University or Research Institution may nominate only one applicant for this Fellowship.
Each institution may nominate only 1 candidate for this Fellowship, and only 1 fellowship will be granted annually.
Research support is up to $25,000 per annum, and the host Institution must supply matching research funds of at least another $25,000 per annum.
Deadline for submission: December 31 of each year.
