Charles E. SmithMr. David Bruce Smith

David Bruce Smith is President of the National Institute for Psychobiology in Israel.

David Bruce Smith is a Senior Vice President of Commercial Management at the Charles E. Smith Companies. Author of four books, and Editor in Chief and Publisher of Crystal City Magazine, he is active in various organizations such as the District of Columbia Jewish Community Center, and The Institute of Psychobiology. He is the fourth of six grandchildren born into Charles E. Smith's family.

David Smith recently wrote the following to the Institute's newsletter:

"I am very pleased to be the third generation of my family to be part of this Institute. My grandfather would be amazed how much a single conversation aboard a 1970 EL AL flight from New York to Tel Aviv could affect so many lives.
"During that nine-hour interval, his good friend, Dr. Joel Elkes, told him about the nascent science of psychobiology. Papa Charlie was so excited by what he heard that the two of them co-founded the National Institute for Psychobiology the next year.
"Now, it is 32 years later, and the Institute is still moving academically and scientifically; it is well-respected, but there is also some change ahead. Dr. Elkes, who has been Chairman of the Board since the beginning, has decided to retire, but he has been replaced by the distinguished University of Chicago professor of psychobiology, Dr. Elliot Gershon. Beni Lerer, the longtime Director, has been succeeded by Professor Shaul Hochstein, whose responsibilities as head of the Smith laboratory have been given to Professor Micha Spira.
"There is no doubt that as the years pass, the reputation and renown of the Institute will continue to flourish; and, I am quite sure, that wherever my grandfather is, he is smiling."
